How to clean a transmission filter on a 2004 Corolla?

I am planning on draining and replacing the transmission fluid on my 2004 Corolla. The guy at the dealership parts store said you don’t normally replace the transmission fluid filter — just clean it. Should I clean it or replace it? How do you clean one?
